I started at Westminster in 2012 and left in 2017. I just got in off the waiting list at the last minute as a space had opened up in Hakluyt’s. Luckily for me, this turned out to be the water house at the time - and I was already obsessed with it. My A-level subjects were English, History, Latin and Religious Studies. I remember struggling to choose between English and Maths, and I’m glad I chose right, because not only was English my favourite subject by the end, but it was also my only A* and the reason I just made my university offer.

I attended Trinity College, Cambridge from 2017 to 2021 and studied Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and Celtic for the full three years. I loved the subject; my final courses were the best and I pushed myself with essays on early Welsh law codes and Scandinavian paganism. I’d missed a year of fun due to Covid, so I sneakily applied for a fourth year in Management Studies where I was the loudest person in the class, asking stupid questions that everyone else was afraid to say. This also gave me the chance to row again: no-one was surprised to see me back in the boat.

I’m currently a strategic partnerships executive at Speechmatics, a Machine Learning company. There’s not much of a market for speakers of Anglo-Saxon! I pour all my effort into my LinkedIn posts, looking for people to buy our speech recognition software, but primarily to show off. I enjoy being almost knowledgeable in such a popular field: I can explain our ‘AI’ development to anyone, but the moment I have to talk to a real expert, they see right through me: I’ve lived up to the Westminster standard of fantastic horizontal knowledge that’s only skin-deep. That being said, if anyone wants to talk about Viking rowing techniques, I’m your man.
